CASE STUDY:
Jenolan Caves House Heritage Refurbishment

Site: Jenolan Caves

Scope: Removal of friable and bonded asbestos from storage ares, maintenance workshops, internal roof spaces, internal and external residential areas.

Total project: In excess of $700,000.

Duration: 3 Months.

Work Method: RMA's Step-By-Step process

  • Isolate and secure each contaminated area with temporary fencing and barriers.
  • Set up encapsulation around the are to have the asbestos material removed, including dust control and decontamination units.
  • Test the encapsulation with a smoke machine to ensure integrity of the enclosure.
  • Set up air monitoring pumps around periphery of the work area to confirm nil migration of asbestos fibers during the asbestos removal works.
  • Remove asbestos, double bag, load into EPA licensed transportation and transfer to the SITA Licensed Landfill at Kemps Creek.
  • Obtain clearance inspection on completed works and dismantle encapsulation, double wrap waste and include with the waste being transported to the landfill.
  • Decommission work area and move to the next removal area.
  • Study: The works were completed within budget and schedule, with no damage to the heritage ceilings and without disruption to the operations of the Caves House.

    There were nil LTI's and nil non-conformances with the project being audited by our QA External Auditor. Our environmental plan was stringently adhered to during the course of the works.
